Stephen M and Sherman
Stephen served as a U.S. Marine and was in combat in Vietnam. When he returned, he began to have a recurring dream about being attacked by a Viet Cong soldier, and having to wrestle and fight for his life. Dreams such as these are a symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
After hearing about Partners for Patriots, he was matched with Sherman. During Sherman’s first night with Stephen, Stephen had the nightmare again. But this time, Stephen awoke to Sherman nudging him and licking him. Continuing to watch over Stephen, Sherman slept behind his knees and each time Stephen had a nightmare Sherman would wake him up and reassure him.
The two had an instant and forever bond, which only strengthened over time. Stephen slept better, gained confidence, and began to enjoy his life more and more.
Sherman stayed by Stephen’s side until the very end, when Stephen passed away peacefully at home. Prior to this, Stephen had remarked to several members of Partners for Patriots about the tremendous positive difference Sherman made in his life. Sherman is going to a new veteran, to continue doing what he loves—providing service to someone who needs him.
